Gambling: Gambling addict suing British Columbia Lottery Corporation

A gambling addict has decided to sue the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. This case is the first of its kind in British Columbia.

Joyce May Ross, 54, has filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court that alleges that the lottery corporation was negligent in its practices. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation owns the two casinos she frequents.

The woman took initiative and enrolled in a program aimed at helping individuals steer clear of gambling and online gambling facilities. Despite being enrolled in the self-exclusion program offered by the BCLC, she was still able to frequently visit the casinos. She feels that the program fell short in helping her work through her gambling addiction.

The self-exclusion program involves the usage surveillance to monitor the activity of known compulsive gamblers. Once compulsive gamblers are identified, the casino security staff is supposed to quickly act to remove the individual from the facility. As a deterrent, fines can be issued in the amount of $5,000 to compulsive gamblers caught in the act.

During her three years of participation in the program, the woman gambled away over $330,000. “I was totally out of control, and I knew I needed help,” she tells CBC News.

Ross hopes to recover money lost during her years of participation in the self-exclusion program. She is also seeking damages.

Ohio set to install 17,500 Video Slots at race tracks – Gambling

Ohio residents will soon have a new way to spend their money: feeding the one-armed bandit, who frequent one of seven horse tracks supervised by the state’s Lottery Commission. Now that the last of the legal challenges has been dropped, plans to install more than 17,000 video slot machines at the tracks can move forward.

To force a referendum on the November ballot, ballot issue PAC LetOhioVote.org previously succeeded in collecting enough signatures, challenging the government’s plan to install the slot machines, but on Monday the group reversed course and requested that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner remove the referendum. Cited as reasons for the group’s actions, a threat by Governor Ted Strickland to seek court relief and last year’s passage of a constitutional amendment legalizing gambling in the state.

Though the fight may not be over, as a question still remains whether the Ohio Lottery Commission has the constitutional authority to operate video slot machines. The group recognizes their best hope to stop the slots resides in the court system, according to a letter written to Brunner by LetOhioVote member Tom Brinkman.

“We successfully defended Ohioans’ referendum rights with our victory in the Ohio Supreme Court last year, and then the voters approved a casino gambling amendment,” he wrote. “With our primary goals accomplished, it seems imprudent to proceed with a campaign that can be easily rendered moot by a court decision or by new legislation authorizing ” slots.”

UFC 116 – Heavyweight bout:  Brendan Schaub vs.  Chris Tuchscherer

Brenden Schaub will square off against Chris Tuchsherer on July 3rd at the upcoming UFC 116 event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. These two Heavyweight fighters should provide a good deal of entertainment as they face off.
These two fighters vary in experience, but both fighters have the tools and abilities to fight with the best of them at a high level. These two fighters both possess thunderous blows and should provide for a good old fashioned slugfest when July 3rd rolls around.

Brendan Schaub is 5-1 in his mixed martial arts career to this point. He is most well-known for his appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter” season 10. Schaub had a good showing on “TUF” but he was not able to come out as the winner despite being a heavy favorite towards the beginning. Despite the disappointing outcome on TUF, recently he has shown what he is made of in the UFC. In his last fight, he knocked out Chase Gormley in the first round of his UFC match.

Tuchscherer is a very experienced fighter that has seen a whole lot of success to this point in his career. He sports a record of 18-2 to this point. He does have one poor spot on his record. He was beaten pretty badly by Gabriel Gonzaga last August.
He has since bounced back though with a victory over Tim Hague in UFC 109.

His victory was not extremely convincing, but it will be good for his confidence to have collected a win after his disappointing performance in August.

Tennis – 2010 French Open Review

Several top players have seen their hopes of claiming the championship cut short, as the second week of the French Open begins. On the men’s and women’s sides of the Roland Garros draws, there has been a few upsets.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have cruised to the quarterfinals without dropping a single set, on the men’s side. In the final, the top two seeds of the tournament are expected to battle it out. The biggest upset so far was when Tomas Berdych eliminated number four seed Andy Murray in the fourth round in straight sets. However, at this year’s French Open, Murray’s first round five set victory was a sign of his fragility.

When when number seven seed Fernando Verdasco lost to fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in four sets,it was another fourth round upset. On Nadal’s side of the draw, Verdasco was the only true threat. In the third round, American Andy Roddick lost to Gabashvilli in three sets. But this is not surprising considering that, at the French Open, Roddick has never made it past the fourth round.

As Justine Henin lost to Samantha Stosur in three sets, the women’s side has seen the biggest upset of the tournament. To win the title, Henin was a strong contender, as the French crowd was eager to see her win another Roland Garros after coming back from retirement. As the second week starts, the bottom draw is wide open as second seed Venus Williams was knocked out in the fourth round by Nadia Petrova. First seed Serena Williams has comfortably advanced to the second week of the 2010 French Open, besides a three set stumble in the third round. You can get on with the action at your favorite online sportsbook and casino.

Lookin At Lucky stayed with the pace behind First Dude and Super Saver, leaving from the 7th post in the 12 horse field. Lookin At Lucky, passed the early leaders, Caracotado, Jackson Bend and Super Saver who was starting to run out of gas at the back stretch.
