Preakness Stakes Review – Lookin At Lucky wins
Bob Baffert had been looking for redemption in the running of 135th Preakness at Pimlico Park. The Juvenile and at Santa Anita and had another a bad trip in the run for the roses at the 2010 Kentucky derby, while the derby horse racing odds favorite, Lookin At Lucky, was plagued by bad luck in the Breeders cup. Baffert seriously considered returning to California and rest the horse after he was hit into the rail twice at Churchill downs on a, sloppy, muddy track.
As the 9-5 favorite after winning the derby with a 2 1/2 length lead, Super Saver, the derby winner, came to the Preakness. He ended up eighth in the Preakness and was only the third derby winner to finish off the board in eighteen years although he ran a good race.
Baffert decided to run the horse and changed jockeys, pulling Garret Gomez and instating Martin Garcia in a move Baffert said was to “change the horses luck” after a week of indecision.
Lookin At Lucky stayed with the pace behind First Dude and Super Saver, leaving from the 7th post in the 12 horse field. Lookin At Lucky, passed the early leaders, Caracotado, Jackson Bend and Super Saver who was starting to run out of gas at the back stretch.
He passed First Dude and Jackson Bend in front of the grandstand and with three sixteenths of a mile to go, and held the lead against a coming First Dude crossing the finish line for a seventh win in ten starts.
